Lutruwita/Tasmania wasn’t always an island. Millions of years ago, it was joined to Antarctica as part of the supercontinent Gondwana. Step into deep time on this guided field experience along the Tasman Peninsula. Designed as both an educational tour and a hands-on citizen science survey, this full-day field practical invites participants to actively observe, record, and interpret the landscapes around them.

Led by geologist and science communicator Dr Hannah Moore and ecologist Yoav Daniel Bar-Ness, the day begins at the Cubed Espresso lookout overlooking Pirates Bay, where we’ll unpack the region’s geological story, from layered sedimentary strata to the towering Jurassic dolerite pillars that define Tasmania’s southeastern coastline.

From there, we’ll convoy to Eaglehawk Neck to investigate the remarkable Tessellated Pavement and dramatic coastal cliffs, before continuing to the geological playground of the Blowhole, Fossil Bay, and Tasman Arch to examine the powerful forces that have shaped this coastline over millions of years.

Participants will:

  • Learn how to sketch and interpret rock formations in the field
  • Use geological maps to understand Tasmania’s place within ancient Gondwana
  • Identify rock types, structures, and coastal landforms
  • Use field tools such as hand lenses, maps, and the RockD app
  • Record observations as part of Tasmania’s first public Geo-Blitz
Throughout the day, we’ll apply the field observation and survey techniques we’ve learned during an easy ~2 km walk along a well-maintained track to breathtaking Waterfall Bay.

KEY INFORMATION
  • This is a full-day participatory science excursion with extended time outdoors. Please bring lunch and water, weather-appropriate clothing, and sturdy footwear.
  • While children are welcome, we recommend the experience for ages 12+ due to the scientific focus and full-day format.
  • Participants will need a valid Tasmania Parks Pass. Information can be found here.
  • We expect to finish sometime between 3:30 PM and 5:00 PM, depending on group energy levels and weather conditions.

TRANSPORT
A limited number of tickets including transport are available, leaving from the TMAG Car Park at Dunn Place, Hobart, at 7:30am. If these tickets book out but you need a ride, please send us an email at hello@beakerstreet.com.au, and we will do our best to make more spaces available.

When purchasing, select 'CATCH A RIDE' as your ticket.
